Origin
During beltane we welcome light and fertility. Beltane literally means 'The fires of Bel' Bel (Belenus) is a Celtic god. Bel is the god of light, the sun god, whom we welcome during Beltane.
During Beltane, fires were and are often seen. The Celts believed that these fires would cleanse them and provide fertility. That is what these fires symbolize.
